The following foods are commonly eaten in America but have been totally banned in other countries. This is due to their toxicity to humans. If you’re eating anything on this list, you might want to research the alternatives or stop altogether.

1. Potassium Bromate

Where it’s found: Wraps, rolls, flatbread, bagel chips, breadcrumbs

Why it’s bad: Made with the same harmful chemical as brominated vegetable oil, brominated flour helps with decreasing baking time and cost. However, the convenience of this also puts you at risk for kidney damage, cancer, and nervous system damage. The choice is yours.

2. Arsenic

Where it’s found: Poultry

Why it’s bad: Arsenic in chicken feed promotes growth and boosts pigmentation, which in turn makes the chicken flesh look much more pink. Arsenic is classified as a human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

3. BHA & BHT

Where it’s found: Cereal, gum, butter, meat, mixed nuts

Why it’s bad: These chemicals help keep food from becoming rancid. Ideally, this is a good thing, however, these chemicals have shown to cause cancer in rats. It’s unclear yet if they cause cancer in humans, but it’s really not worth the risk.

4. Synthetic Hormones (rBGH and rBST)

Where it’s found: Milk and dairy products

Why it’s bad:  Cows treated with synthetic hormones can become infertile and develop inflamed udder. Those same hormones have been linked to breast, colon, and prostate cancer development in humans. Look for organic or hormone free milk and dairy products.

Where it’s found: Frozen dinners, boxed pasta, packaged baked goods, various breads

Why it’s bad: That old adage, ‘if you can’t pronounce, don’t eat it’ applies to this dangerous chemical. This chemical helps bleach flour quickly and  is also used in foamed plastics Certain studies have proven a link between azodicarbonamide and asthma.

6. Olestra

Where it’s found: Fat-free potato chips and French fries

Why it’s bad: Rarely are lower calorie count foods worth it. Especially when the product is made with cooking oil substitute Olestra inhibits your body’s ability to absorb vitamins.Trade out that side of fries for a side of greens instead.

7. Brominated Vegetable Oil

Where it’s found: Sports drinks and citrus-flavored soda

Why it’s bad: The main ingredient is a poisonous chemical that is toxic and corrosive to the body. This same chemical has been linked to organ system damage, birth defects, schizophrenia, and more. Choose water instead.

8. Farmed Salmon

Why it’s bad: If you are eating salmon because of all the health benefits like Omega-3 fatty acids, you need to think about if you’re buying wild caught or farm-raised. Salmon that is raised on an unnatural diet of grains, antibiotics and other drugs eventually leaves the fish with gray flesh, which is then dyed pink with a synthetic astaxanthin made from petrochemicals.
